Cucubalus alpestris View in CoL
Persoon (1805) realized that the species that Allioni (1789) described as Cucubalus alpestris actually belongs to the genus Silene and proposed the name S. campanula , since a previously published S. alpestris Jacquin (1773: 60) was already in use. Allioni (l.c.) published illustration together with the description in the protologue but did not indicate deposited herbarium material. According to Stafleu & Mennega (1992) Allioni’s herbarium is deposited in TO. There are three specimens of S. campanula in TO but only a species name is written on the labels. Since the date of collection is lacking, we cannot be sure that they were ante-1789 additions to the collection. Moreover, it is well known that typification of Allioni’s names is not a simple issue, since Allioni’s original material is often affected by various types of complications, e.g. the scarcity of information reported on the specimens labels, or the lack on the sheets of specific annotations which link the protologues to the specimens (see e.g., Dal Vesco et al. 1987–1988, Di Pietro et al. 2013, Iamonico 2018). As a consequence, we cannot be sure that these specimens are part of the original material (Art. 9.3 of ICN), and their use as lectotypes should be avoided (see Art. 9.2 of ICN). The Allioni’s illustration is here designated as the lectotype of Cucubalus alpestris and a single specimen in TO is designated here as epitype.
