sp. nov.

Rhagovelia barbacoensis sp. n.

Type material. HOLOTYPE, apt M, allotype apt F: COLOMBIA, Nariño, Barbacoas, Altaquer, Quebrada El Muerto, 23 VI 2011, leg. D. N. Padilla ( ICN). PARATYPES, same data as holotype, 2 apt M (PSO-CZ).

Color and pilosity. General color brown; abdominal tergite and ventrite VIII, tergite VII central region, genital segments, margins of metasternum, outer rim of connexiva, greater part of antennae, rostrum and legs, shining black. Anterior transverse band of pronotum, basal 1/4 of first antennal segment; acetabula, coxae, trochanters of fore and hind legs, basal half of fore femur, and acetabula apex of middle leg, yellow. Venter pale grey, covered with abundant, small yellow setae; body covered with bright black denticles. Dorsum covered with long, semirecumbent black setae; bearing long, dark setae on sides of thorax; ventrites VII, VIII and genital segments covered with abundant, small, golden setae. Antennal segment I bearing 9 long, stiff, erect, black setae, two setae of this type also present near middle of segment II; legs with the usual pubescence and setae.

Apterous male. Length 3.96; maximum width 1.46. Length of antennal segments I −IV: 1.10, 0.70, 0.80, 0.66; pronotum shorter than the length of head (0.46/0.28), L/W: 0.28/1.24; length of exposed mesonotum 0.94; length of exposed metanotum at midline 0.08. Mesonotum, metanotum, and abdominal tergites I −III, separated by narrow dark, glabrous, toothed channels along sutures.

All trochanters unarmed. Posterior femur slightly increased, ventral surface in distal half with a row of 12 spines ( Fig. 55 View FIGURES 55 − 60 ), beginning with a sharp, slender, forward-angling tooth and 11 teeth decreasing in size distally, proximal (largest) spine small, 2.2 less than width of femur (0.36/0.16); extending beyond apex of abdomen (0.6). Hind tibia with a longitudinal row of 24 small, black pegs along posterior margin; moderate-length, conical, black, apical spur.

Proportions of male legs as follows: fore femur/tibia/tarsal 1/tarsal 2: 1.40/1.48/0.08/0.24; middle femur/tibia/ tarsal 1/tarsal 2/tarsal 3: 2.44/1.64/0.10/0.74/0.84; hind femur/ tibia/ tarsal 1/tarsal 2/tarsal 3: 2.12/1.96/0.08/0.16/ 0.34.

Median length of abdominal tergites as follows: I: 0.18; II, III, and V: 0.20, IV: 0.16, VI: 0.24, VII: 0.42, VIII: 0.38; connexiva angled upward at 40º. Venter convex, lacking longitudinal medial carina , sternite VII>VI>V (0.34, 0.22, 0.18, respectively), ventrite VII slightly depressed; genital segments well developed, proctiger as in Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 − 5 , parameres L/W: 0.20/0.08 ( Fig. 25 View FIGURES 25 − 54 ).

Apterous female. Length 4.66, maximum width 1.60. Length of antennal segments I −IV: 1.04, 0.68, 0.76, 0.60. Posterior femur L/W: 2.12/0.36, not extending beyond apex of abdomen; hind femur with 6 teeth, armature of hind tibia similar to male; abdomen tapering gradually to apex, connexival margins of segments VI −VII thinned, posterolateral, connexiva angled upward at 60º, apices of connexiva straight, reaching basal part of the tergite VIII, last segment of connexiva slightly converging. Abdomen L/W: 1.96/1.52. Median length of abdominal tergites as follows: I and V: 0.26, II, III, IV: 0.24, VI: 0.30, VII: 0.40; abdominal tergites IV −VI slightly depressed; tergite VIII horizontal, median length 0.38; basal width of tergite VII: 0.44; proctiger horizontal ( Fig. 61 View FIGURES 61 − 65 ). Venter, sternite VII>VI>V (0.40, 0.36, 0.32, respectively); gonocoxa visible ( Fig. 61 View FIGURES 61 − 65 ).

Macropterous form: unknown.

Type locality. Rhagovelia barbacoensis sp. n., was collected in the Quebrada El Muerto, located at 1º 15' 25.2” N, 78º 05' 21.8” W, 1086 m, Corregimiento de Altaquer, Barbacoas Municipality, in the Nariño department.

Comparative notes. The paramere of Rhagovelia barbacoensis sp. n. is similar to that of R. sabrina Drake, 1958 (compare Figs. 25, 26 View FIGURES 25 − 54 ). Rhagovelia sabrina displays a large, shinning, heart-shaped spot on the mesonotum, whereas R. barbacoensis lacks such a spot. Rhagovelia barbacoensis may be further distinguished by its proportions, and the armature of hind leg: femur with (1+11) teeth ( Fig. 55 View FIGURES 55 − 60 ) and tibia with 24 sub-equal teeth along inner surface and apical spur; the hind femur reaches about 1/3 its own length beyond the apex of abdomen in the male.

Habitat. The specimens were collected from lotic water. The habitat was characterized by air temperatures of 26 ºC, water temperature 19 ºC, pH 6, conductivity 0 10 S /m, and dissolved oxygen 79%.
