scientific name

Ficus benjamina L.
status

Ficus benjamina Linnaeus , Systema Naturae, ed. 12, 2: 681; Mantissa Plantarum: 129. 1767.

"Habitat in India." RCN: 7720.

Lectotype (Smith, Fl. Vitiensis Nova 2: 175. 1981): [icon] “Itty-alu” in Rheede, Hort. Malab. 1: 45, t. 26. 1678.

Current name: Ficus benjamina L. ( Moraceae ).

Note: Smith wrongly attributed the type choice to Merrill (Interpret. Rumph. Herb. Ambe.:195-196. 1917), who merely excluded the cited Rumphius element. Smith’s own statement, however, typifies the name, though there appear to be doubts as to the identity of the type. Nicolson & al. (Interpret. Rheede Hort. Malab.: 186. 1988) suggest it is probably identifiable as F. microcarpa L. f.
