Notiothereva albiventris (Philippi) View in CoL
( Figs. 1–8 View FIGURES 1 – 15. 1 – 8 , 44).
albiventris Philippi View in CoL (1865:770 orig. desc.) ( Thereva View in CoL ); Metz & Irwin (Metz et al. 2003:243 listing, comb. change, 244: trans. orig. desc., LT design.) ( Notiothereva View in CoL ). Type locality Santiago, Chile. Lectotype male in MNNC.
ruficornis Kröber View in CoL (1911: 498 male key, 520 orig. desc.; 1913:33 dist.; 1928:7 dist.), StuardoOrtiz (1946:87 cat.) ( Psilocephala View in CoL ); ( Metz et al. 2003:244 comb. change, 245: trans. orig. desc.) ( Notiothereva View in CoL ). Type locality Chile, Concepción. Holotype male in Hermann Collection, presumed lost ( Metz et al. 2003:244). New synonomy.
No distinct characteristics were provided in the description of Psilocephala ruficornis Kröber View in CoL that would clearly separate this species from Notiothereva albventris (Philippi) . This species shares with N. albiventris View in CoL the femora being dark brown to black with white setae; the tibiae and tarsi being yellowish brown with darkened tips; the wings pterostigma dark brown to black, distinct; and cell m 3 being closed. The type locality was given as Concepción, Chile, which falls within the distribution pattern of N. albiventris View in CoL ( Fig. 44). Kröber named this species for the light reddish yellow first flagellomere of the antenna. Although this character is generally dark brown in N. albiventris View in CoL , there is some variability with this character.
Diagnosis. Like Notiothereva aurea and N. simulata in having the frontal setae extending lateral to antennal base; parafacial with setae; and gena lacking anterodorsal patch of short, dark setae. It is similar to N. aurea in having dorsocentral macrosetae; halter dark brown; tibia dark yellow, apex dark reddish brown; setae on frons and parafacial predominately white; and cell m 3 closed. It differs from N. aurea in having mesonotal setae white and dark brown intermixed with appressed, short, gold setae; setae on scutellum white; cervical sclerite lacking setae; and the setae on male sternite 8 ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 15. 1 – 8 ) continuous across posterior margin.

Distribution. Notiothereva albiventris is known from Argentina and Chile ( Fig. 44). Habitats and Temporal Phenology. Notiothereva albiventris has been handnetted in a dry wash; collected in Malaise traps set on a hillside draw, in Nothofagus forest, in a damp wash, along a swift stream, on dry plains, and in a gully; and collected in pan and pitfall traps. Adults have been collected from October to April, but most abundantly in November and December.
Specimens Examined. Type specimen. The lectotype male of Thereva albiventris is labeled "Santiago, Chile " (MNNC). Other specimens. Numerous duplicate specimens of N. albiventris were collected by M. E. Irwin at various localities. Complete information on the total number of specimens collected by M. E. Irwin can be obtained from the author. ARGENTINA .
