Emphytopsis shinoharai Wei & Niu , sp. nov. (Fig. 8)

Taxonus nigromaculatus sensu Togashi, 1992: 38 .

Description: Holotype: Ƥ.

Body length 10 mm. Yellow brown; a large anchor-like spot on dorsal side of head (Fig. 8b), inner side of scape, lateral side of propleuron, a small elliptical spot near lateral margin of pronotum, broad elliptical spot on prescutum, one large elongated spot connected to a small round spot on each lobe of scutum, parapsides of mesonotum and metanotum, mesopostnotum and metapostnotum, ventral 0.4 of mesepisternum, a pair of large spots on dorsal-lateral sides of abdominal tergites 1–8, apices of hind femur and of hind tibia, apical sheath largely (Fig. 8c) black; ventral side of abdomen entirely yellow brown; distance between two black spots on tergites 1–8 gradually reduced toward apex, that in tergite 1 about 2× breadth of a lateral macula; apex of mandible dark reddish, pedicellus dark brown; body hairs silver. Wings hyaline, vein C, basal 0.67 of stigma pale brown, apical 0.33 of stigma and other veins blackish brown (Fig. 8a).

Body strongly shiny; clypeus sparsely punctured, head otherwise hardly punctured; mesonotum including mesoscutellum shallowly and evenly punctured, mesepisternum shallowly and very sparsely punctured, interspaces broad; abdominal tergites with very fine microsculpture, shiny.

Anterior margin of labrum narrowly and roundly protruding; anterior margin of clypeus incised to 0.6× clypeus length; malar space about 0.6 diameter of middle ocellus; POL: OOL: OCL = 15: 29: 32; postocellar area weakly elevated, broader than long (6: 5), lateral furrows feebly curved, subparallel; head behind eyes in dorsal view 0.67× length of eye, lateral sides distinctly curved and narrowed in posterior half (Fig. 8b). Antenna slender, not strongly tapering toward apex, relative length of antennomeres about 14: 10: 36: 30: 25: 19: 15: 14: 17. Vein R+M in forewing as long as free sector of Sc, lower outer corner of cell 2Rs distinctly extended, vein 2r joining cell 2Rs slightly beyond middle. Petiole of anal cell in hind wing about 0.25× length of vein cu-a. Mesoscutellum quite flat, posterior slope shorter than anterior slope; mesepisternum indistinctly elevated; distance between cenchri 1.1× longest axis of a cenchrus. Hind basitarsus about as long as tarsomeres 2–5 together; claw with inner tooth about 0.6× length of apical tooth. Ovipositor sheath as long as metabasitarsus, apical sheath as long as basal plate, roundly curved in ventral margin and subtriangular at apex in lateral view (Fig. 8c); sheath in dorsal view hardly broader than breadth of cercus, setae on lateral sides of sheath roundly curved. Lancet with about 19 serrulae, membrane between serrulae weakly convex, 5th–7th serrulae and 11th–13th serrulae as in Figs. 8d, 8e, subbasal teeth minute.

Male: Unknown.

Etymology: The species is named after Dr. Shinohara, the collector of the types.

Specimen examined: Holotype, Ƥ, [ Japan: Shikoku], Nanokawagoe, 1450 m, 33º45´N, 133º09´E, Ishizuchiyama Mts., Ehime Pref., 8–10. VI. 2005, A. Shinohara (NMNS). Paratype, 1Ƥ, [ Japan: Shikoku], Nanokawagoe, 1450 m, 33º45´N, 133º09´E, Ishizuchiyama Mts., Ehime Pref., 8–10. VI. 2005, A. Shinohara (DEI).

Distribution: Japan (Shikoku, Honshu) ( Togashi, 1992).

Remarks: This new species is close to E. nigromaculata Takeuchi, 1952 . See the above key for the differences between the two species.

Judging from the description and figures given by Togashi (1992), the specimens that Togashi (1992) recorded as Taxonus nigromaculatus Takeuchi from Honshu, Japan should be E. shinoharai sp. nov.
