Type Locality: Ecuador, Esmeraldas Prov., Cachabi River, San Javier, below Cachabi.

Vernacular Names: Southern Spiny Pocket Mouse.

Distribution: E Panama south to SW Colombia and NW Ecuador, both slopes of the Cordillera Occidental and Cordillera Central and western slope of the Cordillera Oriental of Colombia. Disjunct population present in Cordillera de Mérida in Venezuela ( Anderson and Soriano, 1999; Anderson, 1999 [2000]).

Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
