Salvia ×bichigeanii Prodan (1957: 307 View in CoL ; “bichigeani”), pro “sp. hyb.” [ Salvia pratensis Linnaeus (1753: 25) View in CoL × Salvia transsylvanica (Schur ex Grisebach & Schenk) Schur (1853: 57) View in CoL ].
Lectotype (designated here):— ROMANIA. “Jud. Cojocna, Suatul ung.”, May 1921, Prodan s.n., ut “ Salvia pratensis × transs .” (BUCA70884 [digital image!]).
Other original material examined:— ROMANIA. “Jud. Cojocna, Suatul ung.”, May 1921, Prodan s.n., ut “ Salvia pratensis × transs .” (BUCA70896, BUCA70897 [digital images!]).
Notes: —The hybrid Salvia pratensis × S. transsylvanica was described in 1957 under the name S. ×bichigeanii (“bichigeani”) by Romanian botanist I. Prodan. The protologue does not contain any information about the type material or other examined specimens (syntypes), providing only the following information on the provenance: “Reg. Cluj: inter Cojochna et Apahida ad marginem viae et supra paludem salsam” ( Prodan 1957). Nonetheless, this does not refute the validity of publication of the nothospecies name since the indication of name types is necessary only for publications on or after 1 January 1958 (Art. 40.1 of the ICN). The text of the protologue implies that original material of S. ×bichigeanii was represented by several specimens. Consulting the herbaria BUCA and CLA where most of Prodan’s specimens and types are held ( Stafleu & Cowan 1983) revealed three specimens with identical labels at BUCA (BUCA70884, BUCA70896 and BUCA70897; see above). These were collected by Prodan and identified by himself under the hybrid formula Salvia pratensis × S. transsylvanica . Although these specimens generally correspond to the diagnosis of nothospecies, the place of their collection (Suatu village) disagrees with the provenance data indicated in the protologue (i.e., between villages Cojochna and Apahida) and is located 10–15 km eastwards. However, since these specimens were evidently available to Prodan before he described the nothospecies (collected by Prodan himself in 1921) and were originally identified under the respective hybrid formula, we consider them to be a part of noncited original material according to Art. 9.4(a) of the ICN. From this original material, the specimen BUCA70884 ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 ), which best represents the diagnostic features provided in the protologue, is designated here as a lectotype of S. ×bichigeanii following Arts. 9.11 and 9.12 of the ICN.
