Type Locality: Argentina, Buenos Aires Prov.
Vernacular Names: Southern Tuco-tuco.
Distribution: E Argentina in Buenos Aires Prov.

Discussion: Considered distinct from porteousi by Contreras and Reig (1965) and Roig and Reig (1969). Placed in the mendocinus group by Massarini et al. (1991 a). Karyotype is 2n=48, FN=76 ( Massarini et al., 1991 a). In addition, to being the only member of the mendocinus group to have an invariant karyotype, australis exhibts much lower genetic variation than porteousi ( Apfelbaum et al., 1991) .
