Genus Speleognathopsis Cooreman, 1954

Speleognathopsis Cooreman, 1954: 428 ; Fain 1957: 251.

Type species: Speleognathopsis galli Cooreman, 1954 by original designation.

Diagnosis. Palps with 3 segments. Hypostome with 2 pairs of setae. Propodonotal shield present. Propodonotal region with 6–7 pairs of setae. Hysteronotal region with 6 pairs of setae. Agenital series with 2 pairs of setae. Genital series with 2–3 pairs of setae. Pseudanal series with 1–2 pairs of setae. Setae 1a, 3a present, 4a present or absent. Number of leg setae: coxae 1(2)–0(1)–1–0(1), trochanters 1–1–0–0, femora 5(7)–4–3–2(3, 4), genua 4–4– 3–3, tibiae 5–3–3–3. Setae situated in anterior part of tarsi I –IV normally developed.

Remarks. Species of this genus are associated with birds of the orders Acciptriformes, Charadriifomes, Galliformes , Passeriformes and recorded from Afrotropical, Australian, Oriental, Nearctic, and Neotropical regions ( Fain 1955b, 1956a, 1963d, 1964a, 1964b; Cooreman 1954; Fain et al. 1966; Domrow 1969, 1991). The Afrotropical fauna comprises five of the six described species: SpeleOgnathOpsis benOiti Fain, 1955 , S. charadricOla (Fain, 1964), S. galli Cooreman, 1954 , S. OnychOgnathi (Fain, 1964) , and S. wai Fain et al., 1966 .
