Xestomyia atrox View in CoL sp. nov.

Figs 3 View FIGURE 3. A – D E,F

Diagnosis. The species is very similar to Xestomyia hirtifemur Stein, 1907 , from Tsinghai province of China, and the two species can be distinguished as follows:

- Mid tibia with 3 pv; mid femur distinctly curved, with long and strong av and pv only on apical 1/3; hind femur without any p setae, with only a-av setae on apical 1/3; hind tibia with 3–4 long and 4 short ad on basal half, 8–10 very short spine-like pd on basal 2/3, and 5 thin hair-like pv setae on apical half....................................... Xestomyia atrox sp. nov. - Mid tibia with 1 pv; mid femur not curved, with complete rows of av (weak and fine in basal half, long and strong in apical half) and pv; hind femur with a group of long apically curved p setae at middle, with a row of long apically curved av on basal 1/3 and long av on apical half; hind tibia with row of long strong ad on basal half, hair-like ad on apical half, without long strong pd, with only 2-3 weak hair-like pd and without pv setae [male holotype examined]....... Xestomyia hirtifemur Stein

Etymology. The specific name “ atrox ” is the Latin for “savage”, and the species is dedicated, with her permission, to Dr Jade Savage for her seminal work on the Azeliini .

Type material examined. Holotype male, RUSSIA, Respublika Altai, Chihacheva range, upper Naryn-Gol river, 49º49'N 89º32'Е, 2520–2600 m, [from Marmot burrows], 15–19.vii.2009, V. Sorokina ( SZNM).

Description. Male: body 5.5 mm, wing 5.0 mm ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3. A – D E).

Head: Ground-colour black. Fronto-orbital plate and parafacial densely silvery pruinose, gena grey pruinose. Mouth-edge a little projecting beyond level of profrons. Eye bare. Fronto-orbital plate narrow, at middle as wide as diameter of anterior ocellus; separated by a narrow frontal vitta that is narrower than diameter of anterior ocellus. Frons with 8 pairs of long and short frontal setae, reaching nearly to ocellar triangle. Width of parafacial at level of base of antenna as wide as postpedicel. Gena with a distinct dilation covered with dense setae. Antenna black, postpedicel about 1.5 times as long as wide. Arista black, very short pubescent, almost bare. Palpus black. Proboscis slender and elongate, prementum dusted. Labella large.

Thorax: Black, shining green. Prst acr in 2 even rows, 2+3 dc. Notopleuron with few setulae. Katepisternal setae 1+1. Pra 2 times as long as posterior notopleural seta.

Wing with a slight brownish tinge, blackish at base. Costa with spinules; costal spine not developed. Haltere black. Calypters light-yellow.

Legs: Black, all femora shining green. Pulvilli small. Fore tibia with 1 long strong p and 2 short weak p in apical half. Mid femur curved and with a thickening at apex ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3. A – D F), with a group of long, apically curved av and with a row of strong and weak pv-v setae at apex, with a complete row of short ad. Mid tibia with 2 long strong p, 1 strong ad at middle, 3 pv in apical half (1 strong and 2 weak). Hind femur a little thickened apically, without pv, with a complete row of ad and numerous a-av setae on apical 1/3. Hind tibia with 3–4 long and 4 short ad in basal half, 8–10 very short spine-like pd in basal 2/3, with 5 thin hair-like pv setae in apical half, anterior surface with numerous setae. Mid tarsomeres 1–2 with a row of strong ventral setae equal in length to diameter of tarsomere.

Abdomen: Shining green, without any markings. Terminalia : not dissected.
