Discussion: Subgenus Otisorex . S. vagrans complex ( Carraway, 1990) or "dusky shrew complex" ( Demboski and Cook, 2001). Includes obscurus and durangae, which were previously included in vagrans and saussurei respectively; see Hennings and Hoffmann (1977) and map in Junge and Hoffmann (1981); other synonyms follow van Zyll de Jong (1983 a) and George and Smith (1991). Related to pacificus (see George, 1988). Reviewed by Smith and Belk (1996, Mammalian Species No. 528), and by Alexander (1996). Phylogeography of the entire complex analyzed by Demboski and Cook (2001).
