Note: Amblyomma geayi , Amblyomma longirostre , Amblyomma parkeri and Amblyomma romarioi are morphologically similar species, and separation of adults and especially immature stages is difficult. Records of Amblyomma geayi from southern Brazil, most of them from Rodentia : Erethizontidae , have been redetermined as Amblyomma parkeri by Labruna et al. (2009); therefore, Erethizontidae are no longer considered usual hosts of Amblyomma geayi as previously proposed by Guglielmone et al. (2014). The description of the larva of Amblyomma geayi by Amorim and Serra-Freire (1999b) was based on material obtained in the Rio de Janeiro Zoo (southeastern Brazil), which raises uncertainty concerning the identification of this stage after the study of Labruna et al. (2009). Therefore, the Amorim and Serra-Freire (1999b) description is treated here as provisionally valid. Dolz et al. (2019) diagnosed as Amblyomma geayi larvae collected in Costa Rica that showed a 4% difference in sequences of 16S rDNA in comparison with Brazilian specimens of the same species. The diagnosis of Amblyomma geayi in Dolz et al. (2019) is treated as provisionally valid here.
