An Afrotropical species whose adults are usually found on Artiodactyla : Bovidae ; larvae and nymphs are commonly recovered from Rodentia : Muridae . All parasitic stages have been collected from Artiodactyla : Bovidae , Carnivora : Viverridae , and Lagomorpha : Leporidae ; adults and larvae have been taken from Carnivora : Canidae and Herpestidae ; adults alone have been found on Artiodactyla : Suidae , and Carnivora : Felidae and Mustelidae ; while immature stages have also been recovered from Carnivora : Hyaenidae , Erinaceomorpha : Erinaceidae , Rodentia : Cricetidae , Galliformes : Phasianidae , and Passeriformes : Corvidae (Guglielmone et al. 2014, Horak et al. 2018). There are no records of Haemaphysalis aciculifer causing human parasitism.

Note: descriptions of Haemaphysalis aciculifer published prior to the study of Hoogstraal and El Kammah (1972) should be treated cautiously because of confusion with related tick species, especially with Haemaphysalis rugosa . The descriptions in Theiler (1945c) and Hoogstraal (1956a) are supported by Hoogstraal and El-Kammah (1972).
