Note: Wassef and Hoogstraal (1984a) state that the male and female of Dermacentor auratus were described in Supino (1897b). However, this species was described from a female in Supino (1897a), a description that, while later expanded in Supino (1897b), included no male specimen of Dermacentor auratus . Wassef and Hoogstraal (1984a) also state that the male and female of Dermacentor auratus redescribed in Krijgsman and Ponto (1932) do not represent this species, but there are several other doubtful redescriptions of Dermacentor auratus , none of which are included in the above lists. Arthur (1960a) provides an unreliable description of Dermacentor auratus based on specimens of unknown origin, and he was unable to separate this species from related taxa, all of which were erroneously considered synonyms of Dermacentor auratus . In practice, all redescriptions of Dermacentor auratus should be regarded with caution because this species has been extensively confused with other members of the genus Dermacentor . See also Dermacentor filippovae and Dermacentor limbooliati for their confusion with Dermacentor auratus .
