Note: Camicas et al. (1998) list Haemaphysalis hystricis as an Oriental and Palearctic species, but Durden et al. (2008) also found this tick in the Australasian Region. Hoogstraal et al. (1965c) discussed in detail the many records and redescriptions of Haemaphysalis hystricis before 1965. Briefly, Haemaphysalis hystricis has been confused with several species from the same genus or described under synonyms, and many redescriptions of Haemaphysalis hystricis , e.g., Warburton (1908), Nuttall and Warburton (1915), Krijgsman and Ponto (1932) and Schulze (1931), among others, refer in fact to other taxa.
