Note: Tomlinson et al. (2018) cited some problems in the original description of Haemaphysalis subterra by Hoogstraal et al. (1992). Tomlinson et al. (2018) state that this species is supported by the holotype male but its illustrations in the original description correspond to Haemaphysalis muhsamae ; true females of Haemaphysalis subterra are not described in the original paper and its illustrations are of an unknown species of Haemaphysalis . Moreover, Tomlinson et al. (2018) state that the descriptions of the larva and nymph of Haemaphysalis subterra in Hoogstraal et al. (1992) need verification. We therefore consider the descriptions of the immature stages of Haemaphysalis subterra provisionally valid, pending further research.
