Batrachospermum gelatinosum (Linnaeus) De Candolle

Taxonomic synonym: Batrachospermum moniliforme Sirodot : Chaturvedi et al. 1979, p. 53, figs 1 a–d & 2 a–i; Pandey & Chaturvedi 1979, p. 42; Balakrishnan & Chaugule 1980c, p.236; Desikachary et al. 1990, Part II A, p.102; Gupta & Ambrish, 2004, p. 136, figs 1–6; Gupta, 2005, p. 211., Pl. 58, figs 1 a–f; John & Francis, 2007, p. 85.

Distribution in India: Kerala (Idukki district, Thodupuzha Thaluk); Uttarakhand (Kuanwala, Hardar road, Dehra Dun, Dec.); Uttar Pradesh (Khannaut River at Rohilkhand division, Shajhjahanpur district, Nov; Nakatia and Doronia Rivers at Bareilly; Khannaut River at Shahjahanpur. Dec.).

Notes: Batrachospermum gelatinosum is the type species of the genus Batrachospermum . Necchi (1990) briefly discussed the nomenclatural aspects between B. gelatinosum and B. moniliforme . Most recent authors ( Vis et al. 1996; Kumano 2002; Eloranta & Kwandrans 2007; Eloranta et al. 2011, Ott 2009; Keil et al. 2015; Guiry & Guiry 2017) consider B. moniliforme as a taxonomic synonym of B. gelatinosum , which we have followed here. There are many records in the world literature on freshwater red algae that reports the occurence of B. gelatinosum (= B. moniliforme ) that probably refers to other species of the genus and a similar situation should be considered for Indian records of this species.
