Type species: Mantis (Hierodula) membranacea Burmeister, 1838: 536 . Syntype (♂): Eastern India, ZMHB.
Diagnosis. Lower frons higher than or equal to width; pcpl transverse; forefemur with four PvfS and four DS; both pair of wings developed and extending beyond the end of abdomen; basal sclerite L2 distinctly narrower than L4B; sdpm present or absent.
Diversity and distribution. Hierodula currently contains about 104 species, mainly distributed in the Oriental, Palaearctic and Australian Regions.
