Carex buekii was validly described by Wimmer (1852) although most authors had erroneously considered the 3 rd edition of Flora von Schlesien ( Wimmer 1857) as the correct publication ( Soldano 2012). Carex buekii was described from the area around Wrocław: “ An Flussufern. An der Ohlau vor Zedlitz, hinter Zedlitz und zwischen Pirscham und Tschansch. Im Walde bei Tschechniz. In Fürstenwalde bei Ohlau (Bartsch).”, from where it was formally lectotypified ( Jiménez-Mejías et al. 2014c). It was named after the German pharmacist Johan Nicolaus Buek (1779-1856) ( Stafleu & Cowan 1976).

The only known heterotypic synonym for C. buekii is C. banatica ( Heuffel 1858) . It was named after Banatia, a region of the Pannonian Basin, nowadays found in Hungary, Romania and Serbia. Ascherson (1866) was the first botanist to realise that C. banatica was conspecific with C. buekii . Our search for the original material of C. banatica was in vain.
