Sangicoccus morrisoni Kozár & Konczné Benedicty sp. nov. ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 )
Type material. Holotype adult female, Philippines, Sagay, Camiguin Is, Oriental Misamis, on Cocos nucifera (Palmae) , 23.iv.1937, F.Q. Otanes, No. 4102. Holotype is the left specimen marked in red on slide, along with several paratypes ( USNM).
Paratypes, data as for holotype, 3 adult females, 5 first-instar nymphs, on same slide as holotype ( USNM); same data but labelled Acc. No.4102, Bureau of Plant Industry, Manila, P.I., 2 adult females, on one slide ( USNM); same data, except labelled Bureau of Plant Industry, 3 adult females on one slide ( USNM); on Cocos nucifera, (Sagay, Camiguan I.) , -. iv.1937 [sent by] H. Morrison, one adult female on one slide ( BMNH). (Some specimens originally identified and labelled Haematococcus truncatispinus Reyne ).
Adult female. Body of slide-mounted specimens broadly oval, 1.50 (1.30–1.55) mm long, 1.25 (0.96–1.30) mm wide. Antennae 3 segmented; segment lengths (µm) I 24 (17–24), II 6 (6–10), III 56 (50–60), each segment with only a few short setae; second segment with sensory pore; segment III with apical setae about 17 (15–19) µm long and with 4 clavate sensory setae each 21 (15–23) µm long. Frontal lobes present, large. Eyes present near ventral margin.
Venter. Labium 60 (48–60) µm long, apparently unsegmented, with minute setae present on tip. Legs short, not well developed, (lengths in µm) forecoxa 30 (25–30), trochanter + femur 60 (51–60), tibia 30 (24–30), tarsus 27 (24–30), claw 14 (14–16). Midcoxae each 30 (30–34), trochanter + femur, 60 (55–70), tibia 30 (30–35), tarsus 27 (27–35), claw 14 (12–18). Hindcoxae each 41 (41–51), trochanter + femur 74 (65–80), tibia 35 (30–40), tarsus 34 (27–40), claw 16 (14–18). Trochanter + femur fused. Tarsal digitules knobbed, each 23–33 µm long, claw digitules each 16–22 µm long, only slightly knobbed. Coxae without spinulae. Hindcoxae and femora with a few large, irregularly-shaped translucent pores. Each trochanter with 2 sensory pores on each side. Claws with stout curved basal half, each with a denticle. All legs with a few hair-like setae and with 1 sensory pore near tibial articulation of each tarsus. Spiracle each 28 (19–28) µm in diameter; without associated loculate disc pores. Loculate disc pores, each 6 µm in diameter with 7 loculi, present in segmental bands across abdominal segments VI–VIII and in small groups around entire margin. Setae small and strong, setose, each about 8 (8–13) µm long. Instead of cruciform pores, modified microtubular ducts present submedially on head, metathorax and abdomen and submarginally on pro- and mesothorax. Macrotubular ducts, each about 2 µm wide and 20 µm long, present in submedial band on abdomen, each duct with orifice surrounded by wide sclerotized rim and with inner ductule shorter than outer ductule, ending in a circularshaped gland. Anal lobes each with a suranal seta.
Dorsum. Marginal setae truncate-conical, each 12–19 µm wide and 20–35 µm long, present in 11 large groups, more or less equally spaced, each on an area of sclerotised derm. Dorsal setae of several sizes,: largest, each 57–70 µm long, broad, spine-like, with a striated surface, in two medial lines, each with about 9 spines; medium-sized spines, each 38–48 µm long, also with a striated surface, submarginal, with about 10 per side; and smaller, narrow spine-like setae, each 15–37 µm long, present throughout most of dorsum. Macrotubular ducts absent. Microtubular ducts, each about 3 µm long and 1 µm wide, with orifice surrounded by a small oval area; scattered near dorsal setae, and some present near bases of some marginal truncate setae. Quinquelocular disc pores sparse, scattered throughout. Anal ring difficult to discern, situated on dorsum, about 64 (60–68) µm wide, 80 (70–84) µm long, with a sparse row of pores plus 6 hair-like anal ring setae, each about 106 (90–106) µm long. Anal lobes forming a narrow band on each side of anal ring, each with 2 truncate-conical setae 27 (24–27) µm long, plus 2 long flagellate setae, each about 112 (98–120) µm long. Cauda present, narrow anterior to anal ring.
Comments. Sangicoccus morrisoni is similar to S. truncatispinus but differs in possessing a submarginal band of macrotubular ducts on the venter of the abdomen and in by absence of a submarginal band of modified microtubular ducts on abdomen.
Etymology. The species is named after Harold Morrison, acknowledging his remarkable contribution to the study of scale insects.
