Misidentifications

Types. Oides leucomelaena . Most of types described by Weise (1922) were deposited at the NHRS, presumably including those of O. leucomelaena . They could not be found there (Johannes Bergsten, 26.V.2016, personal communication), and were assumed to be destroyed during World War II since other potential repositories were consulted. Since this species is easily confused with O. duporti , designation of a neotype is necessary to establish nomenclatural stability and reduce taxonomic confusion. One specimen housed at the KMNH is designated as the neotype ♀, labeled: “FUKIEN, S. China / Chungan Lower / Kuatung / T. C. Maa [p, w] // 16.X.1941 [h, w] // F. 7195 [h, w, blue letters]”.

Redescription. Length 9.9–15.5 mm, width 6.4–9.5 mm. General color ( Figs 30D–30F View FIGURE30 ) yellow; vertex black; antennae yellow, antennomeres VIII–XI dark brown; pronotum with two pairs of black spots, lateral pairs much larger; scutellum black; elytra with seven pairs of black spots, arranged into two longitudinal rows: three pairs near suture, four pairs near lateral margins. Antennae filiform in males ( Fig. 46A View FIGURE 46 ), antennomeres IV longest, III–VII slightly serrate, VIII–X elongate, length ratios of antennomeres I–XI 1.0: 0.5: 0.9: 1.1: 1.0: 1.1: 1.0: 0.9: 0.8: 0.8: 0.9, length to width ratios of antennomeres I–XI 2.9: 1.7: 3.2: 3.9: 3.6: 3.5: 3.2: 2.8: 2.5: 2.4: 3.2; similar in females ( Fig. 46B View FIGURE 46 ), length ratios of antennomeres I–XI 1.0: 0.5: 0.9: 1.0: 0.9: 0.8: 0.9: 0.8: 0.7: 0.6: 0.9, length to width ratios of antennomeres I–IX 2.9: 1.7: 3.2: 3.8: 3.1: 3.0: 3.1: 2.8: 2.5: 2.3: 2.7. Pronotum transverse, 2.2x wider than long, disc convex, baso-laterally flattened, without reticulate microsculpture but with sparse, fine punctures; baso-lateral angles broadly rounded, apico-lateral angles rectangular; lateral margin rounded; apical margin moderately concave. Elytra oblong, widest at middle, 1.4x longer than wide, disc without reticulate microsculpture but with dense, fine punctures; slightly convex, humeral calli visible, transverse depression present posterior to calli; epipleurae near lateral margins, located 9/10 distance between suture and lateral margins. Penis ( Figs 46C–46E View FIGURE 46 ) relatively wider, 4.9x longer than wide; parallel-sided; bifurcate at apical 1/ 7, lateral process directed mesally and apically, apices of lateral processes rounded, apices conjunct; tectum small and apically tapering; slightly curved in lateral view, apices angular; apex of ventral surface membranous; endophallic sclerite complex comprising one pair of elongate sclerites at base, weakly sclerotized. Apical margin of abdominal ventrite V in female truncate, with small median notch. Gonocoxae ( Fig. 46F View FIGURE 46 ) separated and curved, apices rounded, bearing dense setae. Ventrite VIII ( Fig. 46G View FIGURE 46 ) transverse, medially projecting, depressed at middle of projecting process, with dense, short setae along apical margin, spiculum short. Receptacle of spermatheca ( Fig. 46H View FIGURE 46 ) apically widened, connected to pump, base connected to proximal spermathecal duct; pump strongly curved, apex broadly rounded; proximal spermathecal duct basally sclerotized, covered with transverse grooves, apically narrowed.

Variation. Specimens from Southeast Asia lack the inner pair of black spots on the pronotum.

Diagnosis. Adults of Oides duporti Laboissière , O. leucomelaena Weise , and O. multimaculata Pic are characterized by large black spots on the elytra (larger than yellow area between spots). However, specimens of O. multimaculata are easily recognized by the broadly oval body shape and elytra with four black spots near the lateral margins (elongate oval body shape and elytra with three black spots near the lateral margins in others). Adults of O. leucomelaena can be distinguished from those of O. duporti by possessing one pair of black spots laterally on the pronotum and the black scutellum (yellow pronotum and scutellum in O. duporti ) and by black spots on the elytra that are separated by oblique yellow stripes (separated by transverse yellow stripes in O. duporti ). In males, the aedeagi of O. leucomelaena differ from those of other species in possessing a broader penis (4.9x longer than wide; extremely elongate penis in O. duporti , 6.7x longer than wide; elongate penis in O. multimaculata , 6.0x longer than wide), small and apically tapering tectum (elongate and parallel-sided tectum in O. multimaculata ), rounded lateral processes (hooked lateral processes in O. multimaculata ), ventral surface with membranous area at apex (with shallow and broad notch in O. duporti ; with deep and basally narrowed notch in O. multimaculata ), and one pair of small endophallic sclerites (one pair of elongate endophallic sclerites in O. duporti ; lacking endophallic sclerites in O. multimaculata ).

Host plants. Schisandraceae : Illicium verum Hook. ; Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill ( Yu et al. 1996) .
