Remarks
This species is abundant in Andalusia in rivers and larger arroyos and sometimes in aqueducts below about 800 m altitude. Pupae are easily recognized by the slender forwardly directed gill tubes that are very narrow, wrinkled basally (®gure 49), and often sharply kinked at their attachment points. The constriction of the ®lament bases provides a con®rmatory character for larvae in which the pupal gill histoblast is at an advanced stage, allowing them to be distinguished from those of S. lineatum and S. equinum which are otherwise almost identical.
