Leucocraspedum rufotestaceum Bernhauer, 1927

Leucocraspedum rufotestaceum Bernhauer, 1927: 97 (original description; type locality: “Tsushima” [Tsu-shima Is., Nagasakiken, north off Kyûshû]); Smetana, 2004: 455 (catalogue).

Leucocraspedum pallidum Cameron, 1933: 172 (original description; type locality: “KOBE” [Kôbe-shi, Hyôgo-ken, western Honshû]); Smetana, 2004: 455 (catalogue). Syn. nov.

Leucocraspedum parvum Cameron, 1949: 470 (original description; type locality: “Loo Choo Islands, Amami-Oshima” [Amami-Ôshima Is., Kagoshima-ken, south of Kyûshû]); Smetana, 2004: 455 (catalogue). Syn. nov.

Type material. L. rufotestaceum : Holotype, female ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 6 – 9 ), “Tsushima/ Japan // Leucocraspedum / rufotestaceum / Bernh. Typus un. [HW]//Chicago NHMus/M. Bernhauer/Collection” (abdominal segments VIII-X and spermatheca were dissected and mounted in Euparal by MM) (BL, ≈ 1.8; PL, 0.45; PW, 0.68; HTL, 0.38) ( FMNH). L. pallidum : Lectotype, female ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 6 – 9 ), here designated, “ Type [RRL]// JAPAN /Kobe//J. E. A. Lewis//L./ pallidum / TYPE Cam.//M. Cameron /Bequest/B.M. 1955-147// Lectotype / Leucocraspedum / pallidum / Cameron, 1933 /des. Maruyama, 2011” (abdominal segments VIII-X and spermatheca are dissected and mounted in Euparal by MM) (anterior margin of pronotum to apices of elytra, ≈ 0.9; PL, 0.41; PW, 0.62). Paralectotype: 1 female ( Fig. 8 View FIGURES 6 – 9 ), “ JAPAN /Kobe//J. E. A. Lewis//M. Cameron /Bequest/B.M. 1955-147” (left mid and hind legs, abdominal segments VIII-X and spermatheca are dissected and mounted in Euparal by MM) ( BMNH).

L. parvum : Paratype, male ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 6 – 9 ), “Para-/ type [ BRL]//Amami-Oshima/Loochoo Is./ VIII-11 -‘32//L. Gressitt/ Collector//Leuc./ parvum /COTYPE Cam.//M. Cameron /Bequest/B.M. 1955-147” (right mid and hind legs, abdominal segments VII-X and aedeagus are dissected and mounted in Euparal by MM) (anterior margin of pronotum to apices of elytra, ≈ 0.9; PL, 0.42; PW, 0.67) ( BMNH).

Diagnosis. Body ( Figs. 6-9 View FIGURES 6 – 9 ) small and spindle shaped. Color uniformly pale brown. The last segment of antennae swollen, forming a club. Pronotum triangular and densely setiferous. Surface of elytra densely setiferous as well as pronotum, and finely reticulated; posterior margin sinusoidal. Abdominal parts of female: tergite VIII setiferous and slightly emarginated with four large macrosetae ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 10 – 13 ); sternite VIII setiferous and rounded with 4 prominent macrosetae; tergite IX with 4 or 5 macrosetae. Median lobe of aedeagus ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 10 – 13 ) with long flagellum. Spermatheca L-shaped ( Figs. 12, 13 View FIGURES 10 – 13 ).

Comments. For L. pallidum , the number of the specimens was not specified in the original description, and two female syntypes were found in BMNH, one of which we have now designated the lectotype. No significant difference in external structure has been detected between L. rufotestaceum , L. pallidum and L. parvum so they are synonymized here.

Natural history. This species and other congeners are collected by beating trees or shrubs and considered as arboreal. However, nothing detailed is known about their biology.
