SUPERFAMILY GRAPSOIDEA MacLeay, 1838 View in CoL
Family Gecarcinidae MacLeay, 1838 View in CoL
Rathbun (1906: 838) listed two specimens of Discoplax rotunda (Quoy & Gaimard, 1824) View in CoL (as Cardisoma rotundum View in CoL ) collected in Oahu in 1864 and deposited in MCZ (lot 5769). No additional Hawaiian Is. records of gecarcinid land crabs exist [see Edmondson (1962b), who lists Rathbun’s record as C. hirtipes Dana, 1852 View in CoL , a distinct species] so it appears that the two specimens examined by Rathbun were possibly erroneously labeled. Discoplax rotunda View in CoL occurs in other Pacific islands, including the Line Is., but there are no known subsequent records from the Hawaiian Is. Both D. hirtipes View in CoL and D. rotunda View in CoL were nevertheless listed as occurring in the archipelago by Sakai (1976, both as species of Cardisoma View in CoL ) and D. rotunda View in CoL questionably by McLaughlin et al. (2005). P.K.L. Ng (personal communication) agrees that these records are “almost certainly [the result of] mislabeling.” Paulay & Starmer (2011) similarly concluded that the MCZ lot most probably did not originate in the Hawaiian Is. Discoplax View in CoL was reviewed by Ng & Guinot (2001).
