Gypsophila collina Steven ex Seringe (1824: 352) View in CoL .
Lectotype (designated here):— UKRAINE. circa Odessam, 1817, Steven s.n. (G00214241!, plant on the left). Image of the lectotype available at http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/chg/adetail.php?id=204613&base=img&lang=en
Note:—This species was described in the 1 st volume of Candolle’s Prodromus by Seringe (1824: 352) who provided a short diagnosis, and the provenance (“circa Odessam”); the indication “(Stev! in litt.)” was also given.
1 C. Linnaeus had access to Joachim Burser’s (1583–1639) herbarium, which was organised and named using Bauhin’s principles; the Linnaean citations of Bauhin are linked to Burser’s specimens (see also Jarvis 2007).
There is a sheet at G bearing two exsiccata (specimens) of which that on the left (code G00214241) is associated to the following label: “Steven 1817 | Gypsophila collina | circa Odessam”. Based on these scripts, and the information given by Seringe (1824: 352) in the protologue, G00214241 can be considered as part of the original material for Gypsophila collina . The plant matches Seringe’s protologue and corresponds to the current concept of the species (see e.g., Barkoudah et al. 1993).
