Iba View in CoL View at ENA (s.s.) cuneata Schmidt

Iba cuneata Schmidt, 1920: 50 View in CoL .

Clastoptera bakeri Lallemand, 1922: 273 View in CoL (synonymy by Maa 1962, verified).

Diagnosis. Black, marked with ivory spots as follows: 2 large patches on frons either side of median sulcus, each transversely barred with black; below these, on face, 2 pairs of more or less connected spots on sides of frons and adjacent genae that form a broken transverse band, and with joints in legs and sides of tibiae likewise with ivory spots; tegmina evenly black, apically fading to translucent brown with veins beyond costal "fracture" and tip of clavus weakly indicated. Male genitalia unknown. Ovipositor blades 0.8 mm long, 3 × as long as broad, tapered from base, most strongly so beyond midlength, bearing 1 tooth on dorsal margin near midlength ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 A). Length: ♂ 3.1 mm ( Maa 1962), ♀ 3.3–3.7 mm.

Types. Lectotype of cuneata , here designated: ♀, PHILIPPINES: [Luzon Is, Laguna Prov.]- Mt. Banáhao ( Baker), Nr. 4158 in Stettiner Museum, according to the original description. Maa (1962) was unable to locate this type in Szczecin, Poland because the E. Schmidt collection is now deposited in MIIZ, Warszawa. When examined in 2011 the only known type specimen bore the following labels: (1) a small, printed label to “Mt. Banahao/P. I. Baker ”, (2) a slightly larger printed label in a larger font cut from a sheet with parallel black side borders to “E. Schmidt”; (3) a handwrittten tag “4158"; (4) an orange “ Typus ” label with black borders; (5) a large label with “ Iba / cuneata Schmidt / ♀” in handwriting followed by Edm. Schmidt/determ. 19--" with the date completed with a “20" written by hand; (6) a smaller label with “Mus. Zool. Polonicum/Warszawa/12/45" printed in minuscule characters; and (7) a typewritten “1058” tag of indeterminate import [discarded]. Both pairs of wings had been removed from the type, and one from each pair is mounted on a circular slide in a cardboard mount. These wings match Schmidt’s original drawings, which suggests that he removed the wings. Accordingly, the exact size of the undissected specimen from head to wing tips is a matter of conjecture. Its original description gives the size as: body length 2½ mm, including wings 4 mm; tegmen 3 mm, width 1 3/ 4 mm. Measurement of the actual specimen, with wings removed, is 2.8 mm long to the vertically held ovipositor [before dissection], 0.9 mm from tip of the head to wing base, and 3.0 mm for flattened tegmen, which would equal 2.5 mm in a specimen with folded wings, as the last 1.0 mm are held at a 45o angle. This suggests that the type specimen would have an overall length (including folded wings) of 3.4 mm and width of 2 mm, similar to the type of I. bakeri (overall length 3.3 mm).

Holotype of bakeri : ♀, PHILIPPINES: Luzon Is, Laguna Prov. - Mt. Maquiling ( Baker), in BMNH. The ovipositor was dissected and compared to that of the lectotype of cuneata . Maa (1962) considered a paratype of Clastoptera bakeri as a “topotype” of Iba cuneata but in fact the mountains where these types were found are separated by about 20 km.

Additional material. PHILIPPINES: 1♀, Mindanao Is, Agusan [Prov.]- Los Arcos, 19–23 Nov. 1959 (L.W. Quate), in BPBM. A male specimen is mentioned by Maa (1962) from the same island: Bukidnon [Prov.]— 1250m on Mt. Katanglad, 4–9 Dec. 1959.

Remarks. This small species appears to be quite widespread, occurring in both the northern and southernmost islands of the Philippines. Only a single male is reported ( Maa 1962) from Mt. Katanglad, 1250 m at Bukidnon, but it is missing from the BPBM.

Iba (s.s.) venosa sp. nov.

Etymology. venosus (adjective) veiny.

Diagnosis. Black, with contrastingly transparent brown to hyaline tegminal tips with prominent veins. Body and legs marked as in Iba cuneata ; tegmina black on basal half and on costa as far as "fracture", remainder brown except for hyaline outer 3 apical cells and adjacent appendix; veins beyond costal "fracture" and tip of clavus ferruginous or (on hyaline area) contrastingly brown. Male pygofer as in Clastoptera , but process below anal tube nearly parallel-margined to truncate tip; subgenital plates small and rounded; style stout and strongly curved dorsad, inner edge of tip concave; theca stout, elliptical in caudal aspect, in lateral aspect curved dorsad on basal half, apical half parallel-margined with obliquely truncate tip. Ovipositor 1.0 mm long, 4 × as long as broad, tapered from base, bearing 2–3 teeth on dorsal margin before midlength ( Fig. 10 View FIGURE 10 B). Length: ♂ 3.4–3.7 mm; ♀ 3.7– 4.2 mm.

Types. Holotype ♀, PHILIPPINES: Luzon Is, Benguet [Prov.]- Baguio ( Baker). Paratypes: 6♂♂, 41♀♀, same data; in NMNH except for 6 in CNCI.

Remarks. The length of the type series provides valuable information on variation within species of Iba (see Remarks under Iba lumuana , below).
