DISTRIBUTION: Very widely distributed, from the southern United States through Central America and the Antilles to South America. Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil (Bahia, Ceará, Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Roraima and Tocantins states), Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, U.S.A. (Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas) ( Perkins 1980; Hansen 1998; Delgado et al. 1995; Valladares & Short 2011).
HABITAT RECORDS: Wide variety of habitats. Shallow water, adhering to stones, quiet water area at the edge of a stream and a lake ( Perkins 1980); temporary pools, with muddy substrate, pools in sand dunes, and margins of small streams ( Valladares & Short 2011); lakes, ponds and rock pools ( Benetti et al. 2021).
