Type Locality: "in borealibus Europae, Asiae, et Americae." Restricted by Thomas (1911 a:149) to " Finland." Ognev (1966:268) proposed restriction to "central Sweden," but the species does not occur there ( Sulkava, 1978:76) .
Vernacular Names: Siberian Flying Squirrel.

Distribution: Palearctic taiga, from N Finland east to Chukotka ( Russia); south to E Baltic shore; S Ural Mtns, Altai Mtns ( Russia), Mongolia; N China; Korea; Sakhalin Isl ( Russia), and Hokkaido ( Japan); perhaps mtns of W China.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (nt).
Discussion: Chromosomes described by Rausch and Rausch (1982), and Oshida et al. (2000 a). Subspecies follow Corbet (1978c).
