Genus Callicarpa Fewkes, 1881 View in CoL

Emended diagnosis. Colonies erect, branched or unbranched; fixed in soft sediment by a dense, tangled mass of tubular stolons; stem polysiphonic proximally grading to monosiphonic distally, canaliculated, unsegmented, with nematothecae irregularly distributed on the auxiliary tubes; stem apophyses biseriate, alternating in one plane. Hydrocladia simple, homomerously-divided into regular internodes by oblique nodes; internal rings of perisarc between each node; each internode with a proximal or centrally-placed hydrotheca and three or four nematothecae, one mesial inferior and one mesial superior on mamelons, and one pair of laterals inserted slightly below the hydrothecal rim. Hydrothecae conical, fully adnate, aperture semicircular, margin smooth, abaxial wall straight to slightly convex, adcauline wall straight toslightly concave, thickened laterally at junction with the internode behind. Gonosome arising from a different plane with respect to the hydrocladia, borne on a short though distinct pedicel; forming a phylactocarp composed of stacked whorls of three alternating, radially-arranged ramuli; ramuli divided dichotomously twice, and provided with nematothecae on the latero-adaxial sides. Gonothecae borne at the base of ramuli on indistinct pedicels, ovoid to reniform in shape, aperture latero-distal, operculum deciduous. Nematothecae conical, bithalamic, movable, proximal chamber tall, distal chamber shallow and comparatively broader.
