Widely distributed in cold environments, chiefly in the Southern Hemisphere but also with isolated occurrences in northern polar regions. It is the commonest species of the genus in Tasmania where it occurs on most rock types on high mountains as well as on lower pinnacles. Descriptive data are provided by Rambold (1989) Hertel & Rambold (1990), Øvstedal et al. (2009) and, for Tasmanian material, Kantvilas (2014). This is the type species of the genus.
