Type Locality: Guatemala, Petén, Uaxactun.
Vernacular Names: Guatemalan Black Howler.
Synonyms: Alouatta luctuosa Lawrence 1833 ; Alouatta villosa (Gray 1845) .
Distribution: Yucatan and Chiapas ( Mexico) to Belize and Guatemala.
Conservation: CITES – Appendix I; U.S. ESA – Threatened; IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: A. palliata species group. The name villosa (Gray, 1845) , has been applied to this species (see Napier, 1976:76) but Lawrence (1933) regarded it as a nomen dubium; see Smith (1970:366) and Hall (1981:260, 263).
