Type Locality: South Africa, Western Cape Prov., "Inhab. Cape of Good Hope".

Vernacular Names: Haviside's Dolphin.

Synonyms: Cephalorhynchus hastatus (F. Cuvier 1836) .

Distribution: South Africa to perhaps S Angola: coastal waters from Cape Town to 17°09'S ( Namibia).

Conservation: CITES – Appendix II; IUCN – Data Deficient.

Discussion: Type specimen was brought to the Royal College of Surgeons by Captain Haviside, at about the same time that Captain Heaviside sold a collection of anatomical specimens to the Royal College. Gray confused the two ( Rice 1998:101).
