Kumata (1998) redefined the subfamily, which now includes the genera Metriochroa Busck, 1900 View in CoL , Cryphiomystis Meyrick, 1922 , Guttigera Diakonoff, 1955 , Prophyllocnistis Davis, 1994 , and Eumetriochroa Kumata, 1998 . According to the latest review of Gracillariidae , based on molecular phylogenetic analyses by Kawahara et al. (2017) and Li et al. (2022), this classification has been confirmed. They consider Phyllocnistinae to be a monotypic, derived lineage consisting of the genus Phyllocnistis Zeller, 1848 . They also identify it as the sister lineage to Oecophyllembiinae and Marmarinae. In this paper, we accept and support this interpretation. However, De Prins, in the online databases (2011–2023a, b), follows the treatment by Vári et al. (2002) who considered Oecophyllembiinae to be a synonym of Phyllocnistinae in the Checklist of Lepidoptera recorded in southern Africa.
