Length: 4.2–4.8 mm.

Colour: Generally dark brown. Head with a dark mottling pattern in posterior half; pronotum with dark mottling; Meso- and meta-nota with some mottling anteriorly and large dark patches in anterior half. Ventrally pale. Dorsal surface sometimes with reddish patches, usually in anterior areas of Meso- and meta-nota and/or tergites 1–4.

Body: Robust. Dorsal surface covered in robust tear-shaped setae, ventral surface lightly covered.

Head: Antennae robust, similar length to body.

Thorax: Pronounced bosses at bases of hind margins and wingpads. Pronotum laterally flanged; wider than head. Corners broadly rounded, with fore and hind margins with a lateral pinched indentation. Hind margins of meso- and meta-nota straight.

Legs: Patch of long robust setae at distal margin of tibiae. Light fringe of long fine hairs on outer margin of femora and tibiae. Inner surface of femora with long fine hairs present. Outer surface and inner margin with long robust tear-shaped setae. Outer surface of tibiae with long robust tear-shaped setae, inner margin with long robust tear-shaped setae proximally and becoming long robust setae by distal margin. Inner margin of tarsal segments with fringe of long robust setae. Proximal section of tibiae darker than rest of tibiae. Dark longitudinal stripes present on femora

Abdomen: Hind margins of tergites with fringe of long robust tear-shaped setae. Posterior area of tergite X darker in colour (sometimes with two pale spots); dorsal surface with denser covering of setae; hind margin with broad robust paddle-like setae. Gills purplish. Paraprocts triangular, rounded tip. Cerci short and robust.
