Laphria Meigen, 1803: 270 View in CoL . Type species: Asilus gibbosus Linnaeus, 1758 View in CoL .
Parafacial hair not different from surrounding hairs and bristles. Apex of gonocoxite not separated ( Lehr, 1989). Medium to large bumble bee like flies with long yellow/red hair on thorax and abdomen. The mesal process of the gonopod is complex with dorsal thorns. L. hakiensis View in CoL , L. mitsukurri and L. rufa are distinctly similar in regards to internal male genitalia, and externally different in regards to size and color. Lehr notes (1989: 131) that, “extreme variations of L. rufa perfectly fit the description of... L. mitsukurri .” (See “Discussion” below.).
