Distribution: Albania, Alps (of Austria, France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland), Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Caucasus Mtns ( Azerbaijan, Georgia, Russia), Croatia, Greece, Macedonia, Romania (Carpathians), Slovakia (Tatra Mtns), Slovenia, Turkey, and Serbia and Montenegro; introduced to New Zealand.

Conservation: IUCN – Critically Endangered as R. r. cartusiana and R. r. tatrica, Vulnerable as R. r. caucasica, Data Deficient as R. r. asiatica , Lower Risk (lc) as R. r. balcanica , R. r. carpatica , R. r. rupicapra .
