Perennial herbs, up to 1 m high, stems sub-glabrous or pilose with appressed hairs. Leaves with petiole, 0.3–3.5 cm long, wide ovate blade, 1–7.5 × 0.5–3 cm, acute apex, truncate or obtuse base, sub-glabrous sometimes with randomly distributed scare strigose hairs, with abundant sessile glands on abaxial surface, serrate margin. Capitula 1–1.5 cm diam., many-flowered, solitary, axillary to superior leaves, peduncle 0.5–4 cm long. Bracteoles 8–10 mm long, ovate, acuminate, strigose. Calyx 2.5–3.5 mm up to 5 mm in fruit, exterior pilose with some strigose and glandular hairs, interior with a dense band of thick and short hairs; teeth 1 mm long, triangular, aristate. Corolla white or pink color, 3.5–6.5 mm long. Nutlets ovoid, 1 mm long, dark brown, smooth.
Remarks: — Hyptis lorentziana is characterized by its sub-glabrous leaves with many sessile glands immersed in the abaxial surface, and its conspicuous bracteoles. The type material of O. Hoffmann’s species, Hyptis lorentziana , was housed at Berlin ( Stafleu & Cowan 1979), and later destroyed. A lectotype is here selected among the isotypes. Briquet mentions in the protologue of Hyptis paraguayensis two collections: Balansa 1002 and Balansa 5121. Epling (1937: 319) chose Balansa 1002 as “ lectotype ”, but he indicated he has been unable to find the original material so he had chosen a material housed at Herb. K. Therefore here the Balansa 1002 specimen found at Herb. G is established as the correct lectotype given this material must have been certainly seen by Briquet, who worked at Geneva.
Distribution and habitat:— Hyptis lorentziana is distributed through Bolivia, southern Brazil, Paraguay, northeastern Argentina and northern Uruguay.
