Athanas lamellifer Kubo 1940: 102 View in CoL , figs. 3–5; Nakazawa & Miyake 1957: 776.

Material examined. Indonesia. 1 ov. female ( MZB Cru 4039), southern Lombok, Teluk Sekotong, muddy flat near mangrove, adjacent to seagrass flat, burrow, suction pump, 0.1 m at low tide, leg. D.L. Rahayu et al., 14 May 2014 [LB-St6-20]; 1 ov. female, 2 females ( RMNH. CRUS.D.56736), same collection data [LB-St6-16]; 1 ov. female ( OUMNH.ZC. 2014-10-04), same collection data [LB-St6-21A].

Taxonomic account. See Kubo (1936), Kubo (1940, as A. lamellifer Kubo, 1940 ), Banner & Banner (1973) and Anker (2003).

Habitat. Mudflats and sandflats with some mud and usually rocks or debris, often near mangroves or muddy seagrass beds; under rocks and debris or in burrows of other animals. Depth range: intertidal to 50 m.

Distribution. Indo-West Pacific: Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Indonesia (new record), Australia ( Banner & Banner 1973; Anker 2003; present study).

Remarks. Athanas japonicus remains a problematic taxon with remarkable morphological variation, especially in the frontal margin and chelipeds, and may represent a species complex ( Anker 2003). The finding of A. japonicus in Lombok is not surprising as the species was previously also reported from Singapore as well as eastern and northern Australia ( Banner & Banner 1973; Anker 2003).
