Salmoneus tricristatus Banner, 1959 View in CoL
( Fig. 22 View FIGURE 22 )
Salmoneus tricristata Banner 1959: 131 View in CoL , fig. 1; Banner & Banner 1966a: 153; Banner & Banner 1967: 262. Salmoneus tricristatus View in CoL .— Banner & Banner 1968: 270; Miya 1972: 43, pl. 5; Banner & Banner 1973: 334, fig. 13; Banner & Banner 1983: 88; Hayashi 1995: 523, figs. 287d, 288j, k; Nomura et al. 1996: 12.
Material examined. Indonesia. 1 ov. specimen ( RMNH. CRUS.D.56753), southern Lombok, Tanjung Aan (east of Kuta), degraded coral reef flat with some seagrass and abundant rubble, under large pieces of coral rubble, 0.5–1 m, leg. D.L. Rahayu et al., 15 May 2014 [LB-St7-27]; 1 ov. specimen ( MZB Cru 4057), same collection data [LB- St7-28].
Taxonomic account. See Banner (1959), Miya (1972), Banner & Banner (1973).
Habitat. Near-shore sandy reef flats with abundant loose rubble and large coral rocks; typically under coral rubble, possibly associated with burrows of large Alpheus spp. Depth range: intertidal to possibly 5–10 m, most commonly collected in 0.5– 2 m.
Distribution. Indo-West Pacific: from East Africa to Japan, Indonesia (first record), Australia and French Polynesia (Banner & Banner 1972, 1983).
Remarks. Salmoneus tricristatus is a widely distributed but uncommon and rarely collected alpheid shrimp; the two specimens from Lombok represent the first record of the species from Indonesia. This species is characterised by the presence of several longitudinal or oblique ridges on the carapace, in addition to the strong dorsomedian carina ( Miya 1972; Banner & Banner 1973). Another diagnostic feature is the presence of numerous red chromatophores on the carapace and anterior abdominal somites ( Fig. 22 View FIGURE 22 ), which are much brighter when fully extended.
