Rosapha flagellicornis Enderlein 1914: 308 View in CoL

Diagnosis. Flagellar base suboval, apical style long, cylindrical including hairing, tomentose frontal spots absent, scutum and scutellum reddish brown but scutum blackish anteriorly and along notopleura, pleura predominantly black. Wing with two separated dark spots, legs black except for yellowish bases and apices of all femora and mid and hind basitarsi white.

Description. Male unknown.

Female ( Fig. 60 View FIGURES 55 – 62 ). Body 6.0 mm, wing 5.1 mm. Head about 1.2 times higher than long in profile and 1.8 times as broad as long in dorsal view. Postocular area slightly narrower than length of scape and frons at narrowest point about as broad as ocellar triangle. Lower frons above antennae shining black, without any tomentose spots (similar to R. bimaculata , cf. Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 11 ). Scape shiny black, pedicel and thickened basal part of flagellum reddish brown, apical style black. Basal part of flagellum oval, darkened apically. Last flagellomere about 1.4 times as long as rest of antenna. Whitish tomentose stripes along inner eye margins on face slightly narrower than scape, face shining black, with predominantly black erect hairs on middle part and whitish hairs on lateral stripes. Labellum dark brown except for base, apical segment of palpus black. Erect hairs on base of proboscis and postgena white.

Thorax predominantly reddish yellow but with extensive black pattern: scutum intensively and broadly darkened along anterior margin and notopleuron and a dark medial line to transverse suture distinct. Scutellum reddish yellow, outer spines short, reaching only 1/3 length of medial spines. Pleura extensively shining black, only subnotopleural stripe and posterior margins of anepisternum and anepimeron more reddish brown. Wing pattern as in R. bimaculata . Legs predominantly shining black, only trochanters, bases of femora and knees of fore and mid legs yellowish, mid and hind basitarsi whitish yellow.

Abdomen shining black, only lateral margin more brownish dorsally. Pubescence generally short, appressed or semi-erect, golden yellow on scutum and partly black on scutellum, black on abdomen dorsally and predominantly white on pleura and venter. Longer erect whitish hairs at margins of abdomen basally.

Variation. Compared with the description of the holotype our female shows that especially the pattern of legs may be variable. The examined female has coxae blackish and not yellow and the extent of the reddish yellow part on the fore femur is confined to the apical third and not to the apical half, the mid femur is dark with both ends paler, darkening is not distinct except on the apical third, and only the extreme base of hind femur is yellowish, whereas the holotype has the dark part confined to the apical fourth.

Material examined. T ype material: The female holotype is deposited in PAN ( Woodley 2001) and labelled: Sumatra , Soekaranda , Dr. H. Dohrn. We did not succeed in borrowing the holotype but our female agrees well with the original description. The unique examined female from USNM is provided with the label " Rosapha flagellicornis Enderlein , det. N. E. Woodley, 1980".

Other material: Malaysia: Sabah, Tenompok, 13. ii.1959, 1 ♀, T. C. Maa, in USNM.

Distribution. Described from Indonesia (Sumatra) and here recorded also from Malaysia (Sabah) ( Fig. 79 View FIGURE 79 ).
