TYPE:— COLOMBIA. Risaralda, Cordillera Central, município de Pereira, alto Valle del rio Otúm , centro de capacitación La Suiza (INDERENA), C. Barbosa & Hernandez, 1346 (holotype: FMB! 62249; isotype: CUVC) .

Liana. Leaves 3-foliolate; pulvinus 10–12 × 2.0–4.0 mm; petiole 6.0– 15 cm long; stipels persistent; rachis 1.5–2.0 cm long; petiolules 5.0–9.0 mm long; lateral leaflets 9.5–14 × 5.0– 7.1 cm, asymmetric at base, cuspidate at apex; apical leaflets obovate or elliptic, 10–12 × 4.5–6.5 cm, acute to rounded at base, cuspidate or acuminate at apex; venation eucamptodromous, secondary veins in 3–6 pairs per leaflet; erect hairs on abaxial surface; less dense adaxially. Inflorescence axillary, pseudoracemose; peduncle 30–77 cm long; bracts caducous; brachyblasts nodose; pedicels 1.5–3.5 cm long, internodes 3.0– 10 mm long. Flowers 3.2–4.5 cm long; calyx 1.0– 1.7 cm long, 4-lobed, the adaxial lobe formed by two connate sepals, 5.0 × 10 mm, emarginate at apex, the other three lobes 5.0 × 4.0 mm, acute at apex; corolla reported to be greenish-yellow (C.A. Agudelo et al. 2069 CUVC; S. Díaz 3838 COL); standard broadly elliptic, 3.5–4.5 × 3.2 cm, attenuate at base, retuse at apex, claw 6.0 mm long; wings oblong-elliptic, 3.1–4.5 × 1.2–1.3 cm, attenuate at base, obtuse at apex, the claw 10 mm long; keel petals oblong, 3.1–4.0 × 1.4–1.5 cm, attenuate at base, acute at apex, the claw 10 mm long; pubescent at base of wing and keel petals. Stamen filaments reported to be cream coloured, 3.5 cm long, glabrous. Style ca. 3.5 cm long, sericeous, except at apex; ovary 8.0–14 × 2.0 mm, sericeous; stigma peltate, villous. Fruits 16–26 × 3.2–4.7 cm, stipitate, the stipe 2 cm long, ornamented by two longitudinal lamellae ( Fig. 15A ), covered with dense irritant hairs, acute to attenuate or asymmetric at base, acuminate at apex, 2–5-seeded. Seeds brown or black, globose, 2.0–2.3 × 2.2–2.5 × 1.3–1.5 cm; hilum brown or black, circling 75–90% of the seed circumference, 3 mm high.

Taxonomic notes:— Mucuna killipiana is easy to distinguish from other neotropical species due to the unique lamellate ornamentation pattern on the fruit surface, i.e. two longitudinal lamellae running from base to apex on the fruit valves ( Fig. 15A ). Morphologically, the most similar species is M. mutisiana but the two differ in their fruit ornamentation. In M. mutisiana the fruits are ornamented by partial transverse lamellae (discontinuous undulating coriaceous ridges, each ridge varying from 1.0–4.0 mm high and occasionally raised as pointed extensions). In addition, the abaxial surface of the leaflets of M. killipiana is covered by erect hairs (vs. adpressed hairs in M. mutisiana ).

Phenology:— Flowering and fruiting throughout the year.

Distribution and habitat:— Mucuna killipiana is endemic to Colombia occurring in the Departments of Antioquia, Caldas, Cauca, Huila, Quindío, Risaralda, Tolima, Valle de Cauca ( Fig. 10 ). The species occurs only in the Andes between 1800–2500 m.

Conservation status:— Mucuna killipiana is assessed as being of Least Concern (LC). Although the species has a restricted area of occupancy (116 km 2, EN), it has been reported from ten separate collection localities, some of these in protected areas. The habitat of the species is not considered to be significantly fragmented. No recent decline, or fluctuation, in extant populations has been noted.
