Material examined. 1 ♂ ( NMW [ FR109 ]): ‘ INDONESIA: SE Sulawesi, 3.3 km N Kolaka, small mountain Riv .; secondary forest; run, submerged wood; 57 m a .s .l., c. 04°01 ′ 28 ′′ S, 121°36 ′ 16 ′′ E 28 Dec.1997 leg . Freitag (Sul 2f)’; 1 ♀ ( CFM): ‘ INDONESIA: SE Sulawesi, 8.1 km ENE Kolaka, mountain Riv .; secondary forest; run, submerged wood; 155 m a .s .l., c. 04°02 ′ 06 ′′ S, 121°40 ′ 04 ′′ E 29 Dec.1997 leg . Freitag (Sul 3f)’; 3♂♂, 2♀♀ ( CSH, CKB): ‘ INDONESIA N Sulawesi 1 km W Toraut, Dumoga Bone NP . 200–300 m, 0°34 ′ 17 ′′ N, 123° 54 ′ 19 ′′ E 1 .-2 .II.2006 leg . A . Skale’.

Additions to description

In addition to the original species description based on two females, the following characters are of extended species-level significance:

Body 1.7–2.1 mm long, 2.2–2.5 times as long as wide ( BL / EW), EW: 0.75–0.85 mm. The dark elytral portions, however, are slightly extended, and the anterior yellowish pattern is broadly V-shaped ( Figure 3 View Figure 3 (d)). Most of the specimens bear entirely dark brown head, without any pale dorsal areas.

Abdomen. Male sternite IX ( Figure 16 View Figure 16 (a)) deeply excised apically; medioapical rim with fine pubescence; lateroapical portions with c.10 small spines; paraprocts moderately long, not reaching apical margin.

Aedeagus ( Figure 16 View Figure 16 (b,c)) 365 µm long. Median lobe 78 µm wide and evenly tapering posteriad; apex broadly rounded; subapical portion abruptly bent ventrad (lateral view); lateral portion with few short spines; ventral sac and fibula as in previous species; corona conspicuous. Phallobase asymmetrical; basal margin obliquely concave, moderately sclerotized. Parameres with about six setae of varying size (three moderately short ones at apex and three moderately to very long ones situated more towards the base); surface additionally with scattered minute, spine-like setae; parameres short, reaching about 0.76 of length of aedeagus, not contiguous ventrally.

Distribution

The species is known from several localities on southeastern, central, and northern Sulawesi ( Figure 18 View Figure 18 ).

Comments

The specimens examined agree quite well with the description and illustrations of the previously known two females. The ovipositor ( Figure 16 View Figure 16 (d)) corresponds well with the description (comp. Jäch 2004: p. 395 and Figure 7 View Figure 7 ), although in the specimens examined herein, it is slightly larger (395 µm long) and the number of setae as well as the extent of strioles at the coxite vary. However, these minor differences are considered as intraspecific variation only. This species may be readily distinguished from other members of the Ancyronyx variabilis group from Sulawesi by the unique extensive yellowish colour pattern of the elytra and by the form of the pronotum. It shares with A. vincentarnoldi ( Figure 15 View Figure 15 (b,c)) the similar shape and proportions of the aedeagus; for differences see key and comments under that species above.

The newly collected specimens were found syntopically with Ancyronyx vincentarnoldi (see comments for the latter).
