Type material

Diagnostic description

Body 1.55–1.63 mm long, 2.2–2.4 times as long as wide ( BL / EW), EW: 0.65–0.73 mm.

Colouration Figure 2 View Figure 2 (d). Anterior pair of pale patches very faint and brownish in all available specimens; oblique posterior patches not visible.

Head. HW: 0.37–0.41 mm; ID: 0.18–0.21 mm; clypeus rugulose; frontoclypeal suture slightly convex; frons micropunctate with short elevated granules. Antennae as long as or slightly shorter than head width; gular sutures discernible, oblique.

Thorax. Pronotum slightly wider than long, widest at about posterior 0.35; PL: 0.47– 0.49 mm, MW: 0.49–0.52 mm; posterolateral oblique grooves moderately deeply impressed; prosternal process c.1.15 times as wide as long. Elytra relatively short, 1.10– 1.15 mm long, 0.65–0.73 mm wide,1.5–1.7 times as long as wide. Metaventrite about as long as combined length of pro- and mesoventrite. Legs approximately as long as body.

Abdomen. Ventrites 1–5 with glabrous areas small, submedian areas rugulose; setiferous granules almost evenly distributed. Male sternite IX ( Figure 13 View Figure 13 (a)) presumably more than 400 μm long (basal portion is missing in all available specimen); apical margin emarginated; apical portion moderately broad, with six short setae; paraprocts long, subequal in length, not reaching apical margin.

Aedeagus ( Figure 13 View Figure 13 (b,c)) broad, elongate, 465 µm long. Median lobe long and broad (93 µm), almost parallel-sided in basal two-thirds, tapering in apical third, entirely slightly bent ventrad; ventral sac weakly sclerotized, simply plicate, reaching apical 0.09; fibula moderately sclerotized, basally tapering; corona inconspicuous. Phallobase strongly sclerotized, asymmetrical, with basal margin oblique, reaching 0.25 length of aedeagus. Parameres moderately long; dorsolateral margin almost straight; ventral margin slightly bisinuous; apical 0.4 of parameres with about 15 moderately long setae.

Ovipositor ( Figure 13 View Figure 13 (d)), total length 535 µm. Stylus long, subcylindrincal, apex with large peg-like and hair-like setae. Coxite long and slender; setae elongate peg-like at distal and basal portion, broad and spine-like mainly at distal portion; mesal margin densely pubescent; basal portion slightly more than half as long as distal portio. Valvifer about 0.85 times as long as coxite.

Distribution

The species is known from localities in Central and South Sulawesi Figures 18 View Figure 18 ; 19 View Figure 19 (a,b,d)).

Etymology

The species epithet ‘ breviparamerus ’ refers to the comparably short parameres, which allow to distinguishes the species clearly from its most similar congeners, Ancyronyx longiparamerus .

Comments

The species resembles A. konjo , A. toraja and A. longiparamerus in their aedeagal characters, namely the median lobe being subparallel-sided along basal two-thirds. Ancyronyx konjo differs in its parameres being straight and subparallel-sided from basal 0.35 to apical 0.15, versus shorter and gradually narrowed parameres in A. breviparamerus . The faint, brownish anterior elytral patches are characteristic for A. breviparamerus , whereas distinct patches are seen in A. konjo and A. toraja .

All specimens were exclusively collected from bottom rock surfaces in very small running water courses (a runlet ( Figure 19 View Figure 19 (d)) and a small brook ( Figure 19 View Figure 19 (b))) at altitudes of about 1600 m a.s.l. Ancyronyx tobada occurred syntopically.
