CROCODYLIDAE

The African Slender-snouted Crocodile, Mecistops cataphractus ( Cuvier 1825) , is indigenous to a broad region of central Africa from Senegal east to Tanzania ( Waitkuwait 1989). On 25 March 1983, three juvenile (ca. 1220 mm TL) crocodilians, including one M. cataphractus, were reported stolen from the old Crandon Park Zoo, Key Biscayne, Miami-Dade County (25.704317 o N, - 80.157883 o W), after the lock on a chain-link fence that surrounded a small concrete pool had been cut (Ron Magill personal communication; Anonymous 1983). On 24 June 1986, Jeff Grigg recaptured the M. cataphractus (photographic voucher UF 163093; MorphoBank M88574 ; Fig. 30) near the old Crandon Park Zoo (the date and collector erroneously reported in Krysko et al. 2010a), after it was likely re-released by those responsible for originally taking the three crocodilians (Ron Magill personal communication; Tomb 1986). This represents the first known voucher for this species in Florida.
