Distribution
This species is thought to be widely distributed in the Holarctic Region. However, Wilson and Angus (2006) demonstrated that the nominative subspecies, Aphodius vittatus vittatus Say, 1825, occurring in North America, has a karyotype different from that of Palearctic subspecies Aphodius vittatus mundus Reitter, 1892, Aphodius vittatus sellatus Mannerheim, 1852, and Aphodius vittatus tjanshanicus Balthasar, 1956. Therefore, Aphodius vittatus can be a complex of closely related species. In the Lower Volga region, Aphodius vittatus mundus occurs.
