Hyalosynedra al-shareefii Sabir and Theriot sp. nov. ( Figs 33–36 View FIGURES 33–36 )

Holotype:— ANSP G.C. 38099

Isotypes: — KSA 2015-3, Theriot collection at the UT Austin

Type locality: Shallow, protected sandy swimming area at Bhadur Resort, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (21 ° 45.38’ N, 39 ° 03,15’ E).

Material studied: Wild and cultured ( UTKSA 0253) material isolated from the type locality: KSA 2015-3, scrapings from a large submerged rock in a shallow, protected sandy swimming area at Bhadur Resort, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (21 o 45.38’ N, 39 o 03,15’ E). Wild and cultured ( KSA 0100) material isolated from the same locality: SA 9, epiphytes collected from the submerged part of a boat in a small marina south of the Islamic port near Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (21 o 16.26’ N, 39 o 07,26’ E).

Description: —Measured specimens were 13.4–33.3 μm long and 2.5–5.1 μm wide ( Figs 33, 34 View FIGURES 33–36 ). Margins were convex, converging to a rounded to protracted apex. The sternum was observed to be relatively prominent for a Hyalosynedra , and linear along the length of the valve face ( Fig 33 View FIGURES 33–36 ). Striae biseriate. Virgae 53–57 in 10 μm. Pore densities in the strongly sunken ocellulimbi were 7–10 in 1 μm, and the pore field was generally 5–6 pores wide by 3 pores tall ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 33–36 ). The ocellulimbi were overhung by one or two very small bumps or spinules. Girdle bands found were without pores and all were open ( Figs 34, 36 View FIGURES 33–36 ).

Remarks:— Although valves tended to be shorter than those of H. al-turkii, specimens of H. al-shareefii were generally wider. Whereas the margins of H. al-turkii were more or less evenly curved along the entire length of the valve, those of H. al-shareefii were more nearly parallel in the center becoming more strongly convex as they approached the apex.

Etymology: —This species was named for Prof. Dr. Abdulmohsen Rajeh Al-Shareef, Vice Dean for Research, Deanship of Scientific Research, King Abdulaziz University (KAU), Jeddah 2158, KSA for his support of our international collaboration.
