DESCRIPTION OF ARENIBACILLUS GEN. NOV.

Arenibacillus gen. nov. (A.re.ni.ba.cil′ lus. L. fem. n. arena sand; L. masc. n. bacillus small rod; N.L. masc. n. Arenibacillus a rod isolated from sandy soil).

Cells are aerobic, short rods which do not form spores . Catalase and oxidase are positive. The Gram reaction is negative. An intracytoplasmic membrane system is absent. Anaerobic photoautotrophic and photoheterotrophic growth are not observed. The major fatty acid is C 18: 1 Ɯ 7 c. Phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and an unidentified aminolipid are predominant polar lipids and Q-10 is the respiratory quinone. The type species is Arenibacillus arenosus .
