† MOBULA PECTINATA ( CAPPETTA, 1970)
Occurrences: Langian of southern France ( Cappetta, 1970) and Serravalian of Portugal ( Jonet, 1976).? Late Oligocene–Early Miocene of the Old Church Formation in Virginia ( USA).
Remarks: Cappetta (1970) first suggested a close relationship with the living Mo. tarapacana (formerly Mobula coilloti in the text) but it appears that the resemblance to the extant Mo. thurstoni is stronger. Compared to the material attributed to † Mo. loupianensis , the labial surface is slightly folded. The lingual visor is generally multicuspidate with two cusplike extensions located at each crown extremity, as observed in teeth of male specimens of † Mo. loupianensis . Müller (1999) figured three teeth (as Mobula sp. ) from the Late Oligocene–Early Miocene of the Old Church Formation in Virginia ( USA), that could be cautiously referred to † Mo. pectinata .
