Chorotype. Endemic Maghrebian. This species is found in Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco and Sicily.
From Algeria, L. pilicauda is recorded from the mountain massifs of Mouzaïa and Edough ( Jäch 1993). Our collection in the Djurdjura massif constitutes the first record of the species for Kabylia. In the studied rivers, L. pilicauda was captured among semi-submerged mosses, with low abundance under gravel and pebbles, in springs, headwater streams and middle courses of rivers, at altitudes between 500 m and 1200 m. For seven sites where it occurs, L. pilicauda in Kabylia is impacted by grazing, domestic water pollution and water extraction.
In Morocco, it is found in large mountain massifs such as oriental region and the Atlas Mountains, at altitudes between 244 m and 2000 m ( Benamar 2015; Mabrouki et al. 2018). In Tunisia, it is located in several localities in the north of the country ( Touaylia et al. 2009; Bennas et al. 2018) located at low altitudes between 2 m and 588 m.
