Female (holotype). Total body length 1285 (1245 in 1 paratype). Gnathosoma . Infracapitulum apunctate. Hypostomal apex with 1 pair of small and sharp-ended protuberances ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ). Each medial branch of peritremes with 2–4 chambers, each lateral branch with 11–13 chambers ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ). Length of apunctate stylophore and movable cheliceral digit 230 (235) and 155 (150), respectively. Idiosoma . Propodonotal shield with concave anterior margin, sculptured and punctate laterally. Length ratio of setae vi:ve:si 1:1.7–1.9:2.5–2.6. Setae se bases situated slightly anterior to c1. Hysteronotal shield absent or restricted to small, weakly sclerotized and punctate patches, bearing bases of setae d1. Pygidial shield small, weakly sclerotized and apunctate. Length ratio of setae f1:f2 and h1:h2 1:1.1 and 1:1.1–1.5, respectively. Setae f1–h1, f2–h2 subequal in length. Length ratio of ag1:ag2:ag3 1:1–1.7:1.3– 1.9. Setae ag2 and g1,2 subequal in length. Coxal fields I–IV apunctate. Setae 3c 1.3–1.7 times longer than 3b. Legs. Fan-like setae p’ and p” of legs III–IV approximately with 20 tines ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 5 ). Setae tc” ca. 1.2–1.4 longer than tc’. Lengths of setae: vi 135 (170), ve 255 (285), si 345 (430), c2 430 (415), se 400 (415), c1 450 (420), d2 405 (450), d1 465 (485), e2 495 (420), ag1 215 (300), ag2 380 (305), ag3 405 (385), f1 450 (485), f2 505 (545), h1 320 (450), h2 465 (505), g1 285 (330), g2 295 (285), ps1 70 (70), ps2 90 (80), tc’ 100 (85), tc” 120 (120), sc3 (90), sc4 (80), 3b 145 (180), 3c 255 (230).

MALE. Not found.

Type material. Female holotype and female paratype from Philemon citreogularis (Gould) ( Passeriformes , Meliphagidae ), AUSTRALIA: Beagle Bay, 26 August 1976, coll. F.S. Lukoschus.

Type deposition. Holotype and paratype are deposited in the Biozentrum Grindel und Zoologisches Museum Hamburg in the University of Hamburg, Germany.

Etymology. The name philemonis refers to the generic name of the host.

Differential diagnosis. This new species Syringophilopsis philemonis is morphologically similar to S. blaszaki Skoracki and Dabert described from Anthus trivialis (L.) ( Passeriformes : Motacillidae ) ( Skoracki & Dabert 1999). Females of both species are characterized by the hypostomal apex with a pair of short and sharp-ended protuberances, by setae f1, f2, h1, and h2 subequal in length, the genital and aggenital setae are subequal in length. Females of Syringophilopsis philemonis are distinguishable from S. blaszaki by the following features: the movable cheliceral digit is 150–155 long, the median and lateral peritremal branches have three and 11–12 chambers, respectively, the length ratio of setae vi:si is 1:2.5–2.6, seate se are situated anterior to c1, the hysteronotal shield is punctate, the pygidial and coxal shields are apunctate, fan-like setae p’ and p” bear 18–20 tines, length of setae ps1 and ps2 are 70 and 80–90, respectively. In S. blaszaki , the length of movable cheliceral digit is 195–205, the median and lateral branches of peritremes have 4–6 and 11–15, the length ratio of setae vi:si is 1:3.5, setae se and c1 are situated at the same level, the hysteronotal shield is apunctate, the pygidial and coxal shields are punctate, fan-like setae p’ and p” are with 12–14 tines, and the length of setae ps1 and ps2 is about 55.
